💳 February’s top credit cards for travel

It’s been another eventful month in the travel credit card space, and I have some serious updates to share with you all…

First, in case you weren’t aware, we publish a list of our favorite credit cards for travel, which we update regularly based on bonus offers, card perks, and overall card art beauty (just kidding).

The number one slot hasn’t changed… it’s really impressive to see a player who was just a mere rookie in 2021 maintain the top ranking. It’s truly a talent you only see once in a generation. Check out our deep dive on the card if you want a good, hard look at just how this all-star stays ahead of the pack in just about every sense.

The number two spot, however, is a different story. The new number two card goes to a true underdog… a player that, against all odds, has slowly but surely been rising through the ranks.

Earlier this week, the welcome offer on this card increased to a record-high amount, FAR outweighing the already reasonable annual fee. It’s something we haven’t really seen on this type of card before, and I recommend you explore this as an option to add to your wallets.

Card number three on the list is in the same boat. Because the people who make the card are so cool, I can tell you that this slot is held by the Bilt Rewards Mastercard, which stole the number three slot because of Bilt’s “Rent Day” promotions, which only seem to be getting better and better, as I explained in Monday’s newsletter.

Given the fact that this card lets you pay your rent (and earn points) and has no annual fee, I have a really hard time understanding why anyone wouldn’t want to have this card, to be completely honest with you.

By the way, Bilt’s Rent day is today. So if you have the card, make sure you check out Monday’s newsletter to get in on those dirt-cheap flights to Hawaii.

The final major update comes from a card that’s been lurking in the shadows for a while now, waiting for its turn to strike. And strike, it did, my friends.

This fantastic card came out of the blue with an INSANE welcome offer, potentially worth thousands of dollars, on a card that costs less than $100 to hold.

We’ve talked about the points currency of this card many times in the past (It’s my program of choice). We also wrote this deep dive on how to use this type of point to book luxury trips with over 50 different airlines, including business and first class on airlines like Emirates, Etihad, and Oman Air, the latter of which I just flew yesterday using these points.

The card also offers some amazing perks, like more than a year of free elite status, no foreign transaction fees, and more. For a lower-annual fee card, it really doesn’t get any better.

Those are the big updates for this month. We’re only in February, so I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year holds when the banks step up to compete with some of these offers…

✈ Frontier launches an all-you-can-fly buffet pass

You may remember a few months ago when Frontier launched their annual "Go Wild!” unlimited flight pass.

They’ve come back with yet another offer, this time for an unlimited flight pass during the Summer, with an introductory price of only $399.

On the surface, it sounds like an incredible opportunity. But before you go drop 400 bucks on this, let me tell you... there are MANY caveats that might make you think twice.

Here is the fine print:

The covers flights between May 2nd and September 30th, 2023
You can only confirm seats on domestic flights one day prior to the flight
International flights can be confirmed 10 days prior to flying
You will be charged $0.01 plus all taxes and fees for each segment
There are many blackout dates (you can see the dates listed out here)
Flights do not include any add-ons
You cannot earn miles or status from these flights
You must be a resident of the U.S.

So, yeah... it's a lot of fine print. Here is why I find this concerning:

First of all, only being able to confirm flights one day in advance is dangerous. If you have plans at your destination and the flight is full, you'll be stuck paying for a last-minute flight on another airline, likely at a sky-high price. You're basically rolling the dice every time you want to use this pass.

Second, Frontier flights are already pretty cheap. It's not uncommon to find flights for as little as $20 or $30, including taxes and fees that you have to pay anyway if you buy this pass.

For example, take this flight from Philadelphia to Orlando. The total cost of the flight is $29, which is amazing.

But if you look closely, that $29 price tag includes $25 of taxes and fees.

So if you were to book this flight with your unlimited flight pass, you'd still end up paying that $25, and would end up saving just $4 - assuming there's space on this flight one day in advance.

However, this pass could definitely be worthwhile if you fly very frequently with Frontier on longer, more expensive routes and have the flexibility to work around potentially full flights at the last minute.

For example, this flight from Denver to Boston costs about $280 total, with taxes and fees comprising only $84 of that price.

Flight prices in the Summer are also significantly higher than during the rest of the year, which could also add some serious value to this pass.

So here’s the bottom line: This pass could actually be an incredible deal, especially given the Summer months during which it’s valid. But before you go drop $400, crunch the numbers and search for some sample flights to make sure you’ll get your money’s worth.

🤣 The funniest pre-flight safety briefing ever

I don’t know about you, but I fly so much that I pretty much zone out during the pre-flight safety briefing. After seeing it 500 times, it almost feels like I could recite it by memory if I needed to…

Every once in a while, however, an epic hero of a flight attendant busts out some moves that ensure nobody will zone out.

This video features a Westjet flight attendant (yay Canada) doing a cheesy, but definitely entertaining safety demonstration.
