✈️ 25% off Southwest flights (TODAY ONLY)
I'm hoping that many of you were able to book your holiday travel well in advance to avoid sky-high travel costs.
For those of you who decided to hold out until the last minute, you may be living a Christmas nightmare. Airfare prices in recent months were already pretty ridiculous without the added holiday markup...
Thankfully, Southwest has decided to single-handedly save Christmas by offering a 25% discount on Christmas and New Year's Eve/Day flights.
Here are the details:
- 25% discount on flights on 12/24-12/15 and 12/31-1/1
- You must book your flights by the end of the day today
- Use promo code HOLIDAY25 when searching for flights
- Only valid for flights in the continental U.S.
This is pretty amazing. Most airline promos exclude high-traffic travel days like Christmas and New Year's, so it's really awesome to have a deal specifically for them.
I ran a quick search from Baltimore to Manchester, NH, a route I used to fly all the time during the holidays (shoutout to my fellow New Hampshire-ites) - and found some very reasonable prices right away.

As you can see, flights on Christmas day are as low as $102 (with the 25% discount), which is a pretty incredible deal for what is otherwise a really expensive day to travel.
Of course, longer routes will likely be more expensive, but that also means that the discount will be more significant.
If you need to travel on Christmas or New Year's and haven't booked your travel yet, here is the solution. But also, don't wait that long to book travel in the future - we can't expect Southwest to save you every year.

🗺️ The most useful travel map
If you've ever traveled abroad, you've probably experienced the moment where you try to plug in your phone only to realize that you brought the wrong plug adapter.
These days you can get universal power adapters for pretty cheap, but I'm not really a fan of them. I find them too bulky for my backpack, and they're so heavy that they constantly fall out of the socket.
Instead of building a precarious tower of clothing and hotel bibles to balance the adapter, I prefer to just bring more compact ones specifically for the destinations I'm traveling to.
But I can barely remember what I had for dinner last night, let alone the complexities of international power sockets.
Thankfully, I found this map on Reddit (thank you, travel Redditors of the world), which makes life a lot easier. I think my Christmas present to myself will be a printout of this to hang on my wall.

📱 The EU will allow 5G phone service on planes
Have you ever been on a plane waiting for other passengers to board, keeping yourself entertained by watching some Netflix?
The plane starts taxiing, and the flight attendants tell you to put your phone on airplane mode immediately.
Now for the next two and a half hours, you're stuck wondering if love really is blind.
Well, fliers in Europe might only have this problem for a little while longer.
The European Commission recently ruled to allow airlines to utilize the latest 5G technology onboard European planes, potentially making voice calls at 40,000 feet no different than on the ground. Thierry Breton, Commissioner for the Internal market, said:
"5G will enable innovative services for people and growth opportunities for European companies. The sky is no longer a limit when it comes to possibilities offered by super-fast, high-capacity connectivity."
What this means is that "shouting on the phone while everyone else tries to sleep" might be added to the list of most annoying things you can do on a plane, alongside;
- Fully reclining your seat during meal service
- Hogging the armrest
- Standing up and taking your things out of the overhead bins five seconds after the plane lands, even though you're in row 52...

There are still plenty of questions surrounding the potential problems with passengers having free reign to take calls in the middle of flights.
In a 2019 CNN story, flight attendants who were asked about this said that " unrestricted cell phone use would lead to chaos, conflict, and downright craziness" and that they oppose such an idea vociferously (which is an incredible word, by the way).
Anyway, it's always great to see another technological improvement to the travel experience.
Let's just hope people use their power wisely. To quote the eloquent poet Robert Frost, "with great power comes great responsibility."
At least, I think that was Robert Frost...

That's all for today, folks. I'm pretty pumped about the possibility of using 5G on flights. As someone who works remotely, the thought of not needing to rely on plane wifi is very appealing to me...
